With it being Easter weekend, I was thinking back to Easters I remember as a kid in the ‘80s. In my house, it was like a mini-Christmas morning. Mom would surprise me with an Easter backet of goodies. We would then get all dressed up in our Sunday best which was one of the few times during the year I’d see my Dad in something other than his old work clothes. Mom would scope out local Easter egg hunts for me to scavenge for eggs. Here’s a picture I found recently of me from Easter 1983…
Got to love the décor and the fiber optic lamp.
One Easter I remember an egg hunt at the VFW. It was a great place to hunt because they had a decent amount of property with a decommissioned WWII tank that sat out front. This hunt was memorable because mixed with the normal plastic eggs containing half-melted chocolate candy were a handful of colorful hard-boiled eggs with numbers written on them. If you found one, you went to the event coordinator afterward to claim a prize associated with the number you found. For the life of me, I can’t remember the big prizes but I do remember finding a prize egg and being so excited to redeem it.
Do you remember any memorable Easter egg hunts you experienced as a kid? Would love to hear about it. Click the online version of this issue and leave a comment with your story. Have a totally rad Easter, everyone! - Jason
